Confederate and Civil Rights Birthplace!

Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, is also the birthplace of both the Confederacy and the Civil Rights Movement. Montgomery landmarks and museums tell the story of life and social change in the South from the days of the Old South to the quest for social justice and equality. Montgomery is also a cosmopolitan city with facilities that feature Shakespear, family musicals, country music memorabilia, fine art and habitats for animals from around the world.

The First White House of the Confederacy is located on Washington Avenue in historic downtown Montgomery. This Italian style house was the home of Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his wife during the days when Montgomery was the capital of the Confederacy. The house is furnished with pieces from the 1850s. St. John's Episcopal Church, Montgomery's oldest Episcopal church, features Jefferson Davis' pew.

Old Alabama Town is a section of historic downtown Montgomery that features 50 authentically restored 19th and early 20th century buildings. Collectively, the buildings

provide an image of Alabama life and work during that period. The Alabama Department of Archives & History contains private historical records and exhibits from Alabama's history. This archives is the oldest state funded archives in the United States.

The quest for social justice is memorialized at the Civil Rights Museum Center, the Dexter Parsonage Museum and the Rosa Parks Museum and Children's Wing. The Civil Rights Memorial is located at the Center and honors persons killed during the civil rights movement. The Dexter Parsonge Museum was Dr. Martin Luther King's residence during the Montgomery Civil Rights bus boycott. The Rosa Parks Museum depicts events that triggered the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement.

Montgomery has three theaters that feature a variety of productions. The Alabama Shakespear Festival is one of the world's 10 largest Shakespear theaters and features year round classical and contemporary productions. Faulkner University Dinner Theater features family muiscals, drams and concerts. Davis Theatre for the Performing Arts at Troy University is named for Jefferson Davis. In addition to concerts, this restored 1930s fine arts center is the location of Broadway shows in Montgomery.

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts houses Southern regional art, Old Master prints, Studio Glass, decorative arts as well as American paintings and sculptures. F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald Museum is located in the apartment building where the Fitzgeralds lived is dedicated to their memory. The Alabama War Memorial and Wall of Honor is dedicated to Alabamians who gave their lives is service for safety and security. The memorial includes 27 Alabamians who received the Congressional Medal of Honor.

The Montgomery Zoo features 600 animals in 5 continents. The animals reside in barrier free, naturalistic habitats. The Mooseum is an interactive museum that features exhibits on Alabama's beef cattle industry and the future of agriculture.
