Saint Simons Island Light is an historical landmark of the island. The original lighthouse built in 1810 was destroyed in the Civil War. It was replaced in 1872 and updated during subsequent years with the most recent renovation being completed in 2010. Today the lighthouse is operated by the Coast Guard Auxiliary for navigation aid. This lighthouse guides ships into Saint Simons Sound and warns of sandbars in the area.
The lighthouse also serves as a museum. Coastal Georgia Historical Society operates the museum in the keeper's house. The adjacent A. W. Jones Heritage Center features exhibits, archives, a research library, event hall and museum shop.
